Hi, I'm Sarah

If you struggle with binge eating, you may have spent years trying to figure out what is “wrong” with you…and you can’t imagine how intuitive eating coaching can help. Maybe you’ve told yourself that you just need more discipline and promised yourself that tomorrow will be different. Perhaps you’ve created rules around food, started another plan, or tried to be “good” all day, only to find yourself eating in a way that feels completely out of control by the evening. Afterward, you might feel regret, shame, or frustration. Why can’t I just stop binge eating? you wonder.

The truth is, binge eating is rarely about a lack of willpower. For many people, binge eating is a response to a much deeper pattern involving restriction, stress, emotional overwhelm, body disconnection, and a nervous system that has learned to seek comfort, relief, or safety through food.

Related: physical food restriction, mental food restriction, emotional food restriction, nervous system restriction

This is where intuitive eating coaching can help. Rather than focusing on controlling your eating more, intuitive eating coaching helps you understand why binge eating is happening and develop a more compassionate, sustainable relationship with food.

Why Willpower Doesn’t Fix Binge Eating

Many women who come to me are incredibly successful in other areas of their lives. Responsible, motivated, and capable of following through on commitments, it can feel confusing and even embarassing when food feels like the one area where you can’t seem to “get it together.” If you run a business, lead a team, care for others, and/or manage a demanding career, it’s totally understandable that you struggle to reconcile your food struggles. I mean, if I can manage everything else in my life, why can’t I just control myself around food?

Dear reader, binge eating isn’t a character flaw, and it’s not evidence that you don’t have your sh*t together. It is often your body’s response to feeling deprived, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsafe. When you’ve spent years restricting food, ignoring hunger, trying to change your body, or believing certain foods are dangerous, your body can begin to respond as though food is scarce. Even if you are not consciously dieting, your body may still be carrying the effects of years of restriction. This is why trying harder and placing even more pressure on yourself often creates more struggle. The solution isn’t actually more control, but more understanding of your version of the restrict-binge cycle.

The Connection Between Restriction and Binge Eating

One of the most important concepts we explore in intuitive eating coaching is the relationship between restriction and binge eating. Restriction doesn’t only mean eating very little.

Restriction can also look like:

  • Telling yourself you cannot have certain foods.
  • Feeling guilty after eating something enjoyable.
  • Trying to compensate for what you ate.
  • Ignoring hunger because it is inconvenient.
  • Believing you need to earn your food through exercise.
  • Constantly thinking about changing your body.

Even when restriction feels like it is helping you stay “on track,” it can create a cycle where your body and brain become increasingly focused on food. Eventually, the effort required to maintain control becomes exhausting. Binge eating can become the body’s way of pushing back against deprivation (see: why you feel out of control around food). This doesn’t mean your body is working against you, but rather, that it’s trying to protect you.

Why Intuitive Eating Coaching Can Help With Binge Eating

Many approaches to binge eating focus only on stopping the behaviour. While learning skills to manage urges can be helpful, lasting change usually requires understanding what is underneath the behaviour.

In trauma-informed intuitive eating coaching, we look at the full picture.

Together, we explore:

  • Your relationship with food and dieting.
  • Your hunger and fullness cues.
  • Your beliefs about your body.
  • The emotions connected to eating.
  • Your patterns of stress and overwhelm.
  • The situations where binge eating tends to show up.

Instead of asking how to stop behaviours, we start asking what’s driving them.

The Role of the Nervous System in Binge Eating

Binge eating is not only a behaviour; it’s also a body-based experience. When you are stressed, overwhelmed, exhausted, or emotionally flooded, your nervous system naturally looks for ways to regulate. Food can provide comfort, pleasure, grounding, and temporary relief. Just because food provides relief doesn’t mean it’s pathological or “bad.” On the contrary: food is meant to be comforting and bring pleasure. The struggle often begins when food becomes one of the only tools you have available to cope.

Through a trauma-informed approach, we explore how to expand your capacity to experience emotions, stress, and discomfort without automatically turning to old patterns. We’re not looking to remove your coping strategies, but to build more options instead.

What Makes Intuitive Eating Coaching Different?

Like many others who struggle with binge eating, you may have spent many years receiving the message that your body is the problem. You’ve been told to try harder, lose weight, follow a plan, or control their eating in some way. But hear me out: if restriction and shame were the solution, you would have found freedom already. Intuitive eating coaching offers a different approach.

Instead of creating another set of rules, we work toward:

  • Rebuilding trust with your body.
  • Reducing fear around food.
  • Understanding your eating patterns.
  • Developing more compassionate responses to yourself.
  • Creating flexibility instead of perfection.

Full recovery doesn’t happen by trying harder, but by showing yourself more compassion and understanding how the behaviours are serving you.

Can You Really Stop Binge Eating Without Dieting?

Dear reader, if for your entire life you’ve been told that dieting is the solution to feeling out of control around food, letting go of it can feel frightening. You may worry that without rules, you will never stop eating certain foods or that everything will become chaotic. These fears are incredibly common and make so much sense.

In contrast, many women discover that when they stop fighting their bodies, they actually become more connected to their needs. They notice hunger earlier than they did before. They feel less urgency around food. They can enjoy foods they once feared without feeling consumed by them. You won’t become someone who never thinks about food, but it it possible to stop feeling like it’s a constant battle you can’t win.

You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck in the Binge-Restrict Cycle

If you have been struggling with binge eating, you may have spent years blaming yourself for something that is much more complex than willpower. I want you to know that your eating patterns developed for a reason. With the right support, you can begin understanding those patterns, reconnecting with your body, and creating a relationship with food that feels calmer and more trusting. You deserve to spend less time fighting with food and more time enjoying your life.
